Born in Kerala, Sunny Joseph was an ardent lover of cinema during his teen age. He started his film career, at the age of fifteen by becoming a projectionist [without pay] in a cinema hall near his home [1972-1974, 'Bhavani Theatre', Cherthala. An ardent film buff, Sunny saw more than 365 films in 1974. During his degree studies [Zoology] he made amateur Films in 8mm and 16mm formats. During 1977-1979 he founded and organised 'Free Circle Film Society' at Cherthala, his native town. In 1979 Sunny joined the Film and Television Institute of India, Pune. Specialising in Motion Picture Photography he graduated from the FTII in 1983. During 1983-1987 worked as an associate cameraman to cinematographers Venu, Shaji and Madhu Ambat.From 1987 onwards working as a Director Of Photography. During the last 12 years photographed more than 30 feature films and many short films. Working all over India he has worked in eight languages-Malayalam, Tamil, Bengali, Kannada, Manipuri, Hindi/Panjabi and English with eminent directors like G.Aravindan, Shaji N Karun, Aribam Shyam Sharma, Malay Bhattacharya, K.G. George, Pamela Rooks and Chandrashekar. Sunny Joseph also works as a Director. He has more than six short films and two television serials to his credit. Among Sunny's cinematography works "PIRAVI", "VASTHUHARA", "SANABI", "KAHINI", "TRAIN TO PAKISTAN", "MANGAMMA", "DAYA", "UNNI", "AMERICA AMERICA" etc. are well acclaimed. Apart from the professional activities Sunny, is also a keen film teacher, conducting regular workshops in Kerala; Film and TV Institute of India, Pune; Satyajith Ray Film and TV Institute, Calcutta, and Asian Film Centre, Colombo. Currently functions as the General Secretary of Indian Society of Cinematographers and as a member, Kerala Chalachtra Academy.
